Capturing her dedication to fostering inclusive learning, Dr. Kim Gilmore sits amidst a treasure trove of structured literacy resources, poised to make a lasting impact on the educational journey of her students at Orakei School. Among these resources lies a glimpse of the eagerly anticipated 'Monster Conversations' communication cards, a groundbreaking tool poised to revolutionise how tamariki and rangatahi engage in meaningful dialogues surrounding emotions, situations, and feelings.

The journey towards embracing these transformative tools was made possible through the unwavering support of the community, particularly through the funds raised during the 2023 Hero Hustle Fun-Raiser. With the generous contributions received, Ōrākei School will be able to invest in additional structured literacy resources, laying the foundation for enhanced learning experiences for all students.

Looking towards the future, the 2024 Fun-Raiser takes on a new name, 'Cheekee Hero Day', inspired by a poignant conversation with one of Ōrākei School's very own tauira (student). When asked, "When is Cheekee Hero Day?" the question sparked a wave of inspiration, leading to the renaming of the annual event in honour of the beloved Cheekee Heroes who embody the spirit of resilience and empowerment.

At the forefront of these initiatives lies the revolutionary 'Monster Conversations' communication cards, poised to serve as a catalyst for fostering open communication and understanding among students. Designed to assist tamariki and rangatahi in navigating the intricate landscape of neurodivergence or those struggling to express themselves, these cards serve as guardians of open dialogue, ensuring discussions about challenges and situations are fluid, liberating, and transformative.

As Ōrākei School continues to champion inclusive education, Dr. Gilmore stands as a beacon of inspiration, leading the charge toward a future where every child feels valued, heard, and empowered to thrive.

A special acknowledgment must also go to our brilliant, gentle creative, Sian Winmill for allowing Cheekee Hero Charity to revive what she started in her final year in College. Thank you Sian for entrusting us with your 'Tic' We will make you proud.
